What it's like to be in Ubud

Ubud sits in the highland heart of Bali, cradled by river gorges and layered rice terraces that turn gold in the late afternoon. It has been the island's creative and spiritual centre for centuries — every village compound holds a temple, every ceremony spills into the street, and the smell of incense and frangipani is constant, unhurried background.

The town itself has grown considerably, but walk ten minutes in any direction and the grid disappears into paddy paths and jungle. That balance is what keeps people here longer than planned: mornings that begin with sound baths or yoga, afternoons on rented bikes through Campuhan Ridge, evenings watching Kecak fire dancers at Pura Dalem Ubud.

Food is another reason to stay. Ubud's dining scene runs from humble warungs serving nasi campur on banana leaf to destination restaurants drawing from the surrounding farms. The market on Jl. Raya Ubud is open before dawn, worth the early alarm.

Eat & drink

How to eat like you live here

The experiences worth planning a day around — not a restaurant list, a way to eat the place.

01

Nasi campur at a warung

A mound of steamed rice circled by small portions of whatever's been cooked that morning — the truest, most Balinese way to eat.

02

Babi guling ritual

Spit-roasted suckling pig, crispy skin and fragrant spiced stuffing. Seek it out for lunch, when it's freshest and the queue is worth it.

03

Jamu morning tonic

Turmeric, ginger, tamarind and palm sugar blended into a warm golden drink. Sold from baskets at dawn; the island's original wellness ritual.

04

Sate lilit grilled fresh

Minced fish or chicken pressed onto lemongrass skewers and grilled over coconut shell charcoal. Eaten street-side, still smoking.
