What it's like to be in Toronto

Toronto is the most ethnically diverse large city on the planet — not as a talking point but as a lived daily reality. More than half its residents were born outside Canada, which means the food landscape alone is extraordinary: Little Portugal, Greektown, Little Italy, Chinatown, Koreatown, Little India — many of these are full neighbourhoods with decades of culinary depth, not tourist-facing gestures.

The city sits on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario, and that water defines a lot: a wide, breezy waterfront, summer beach culture at Toronto Islands, and winter light that bounces off a lake so large it looks like an inland sea. The skyline is dominated by the CN Tower, which at 553 metres was the tallest free-standing structure in the world for decades and remains unmistakably the city's emblem.

Toronto rewards the walker willing to move between neighbourhoods rather than anchor in one. Kensington Market is bohemian and global; Queen West is creative and caffeinated; the Distillery District is Victorian industrial turned arts village; the Annex is bookshop and patio territory. Every 15 minutes on foot is a different character — and the TTC streetcars connect it all.

Eat & drink

How to eat like you live here

The experiences worth planning a day around — not a restaurant list, a way to eat the place.

01

Peameal bacon sandwich

Toronto's own: back bacon rolled in cornmeal, served on a bun at St Lawrence Market on a Saturday morning. No condiments needed.

02

Dim sum in Scarborough

The eastern suburbs hold some of North America's finest Cantonese cooking. Weekend carts, enormous family tables, no reservations.

03

Roti from Kensington

A wrap of Trinidadian origin, packed with curried potato, chickpea, and your choice of protein. Outstanding, genuinely affordable fast food.

04

Patio season beer

The moment temperatures clear 15 degrees, every patio in the city opens. A local craft beer in afternoon sun is a Toronto rite of spring.
